Description
Description:Refugees are a marginalized group in Hong Kong as they are unable to work and gain a decent income to serve the basic needs for them and their families. For most of the refugee children, after-school activities and tutoring that develop abilities and build self-confidence and social skills are an inaccessible luxury.
Volunteer roles:
Volunteers help a group of primary & secondary school students (aged 6-18 years old, ~25-35 students) with refugee or asylum backgrounds with their school work. Most of them need support in Cantonese, English, Mathematics and General Studies.
Another important aspect of the homework group is not just helping them with arithmetic, reading, dictation etc. but also in building their confidence. The school environment can be quite challenging with high academic pressure. A number of them have fallen behind with their studies.
Volunteers will need to give some words of encouragement to let the students believe in their abilities to tackle challenges.
Language: English Speakers & Cantonese speakers who know how to write traditional Chinese
All volunteers who attend this activity must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. If you wish to have a friend or family member join you on this activity, they must first register with HandsOn and sign up for the activity.
