Description
Description: Join this volunteer information session, hear from the Christian Action Center and discover how you can help support their community of young families as a regular volunteer.
Volunteers help a group of primary & secondary school students (aged 6-18 years old, ~20-25 students) with refugee or asylum backgrounds with their school work. Most of them need support in Mathematics, Science, Cantonese, English, etc.
Another important aspect of the homework group is not just helping them with arithmetic, reading, dictation, etc. but also building their confidence. The school environment can be quite challenging with a lot of homework given and a lot of the time, not enough individual attention can be given to them at school. So they deserve and need adults to work through school issues with them patiently as well as build on their strengths.
Sometimes all they need are some words of encouragement and for them to believe in their abilities to tackle something challenging to them. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers who are able to give a commitment on a weekly basis to make greater impact.
The homework support is held weekly on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12 noon. Volunteers who join this information session, please also sign up for the following homework support session at 10:30 am to continue to support the children.
All volunteers who attend this activity must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. If you wish to have a friend or family member join you in this activity, they must first register with HandsOn and sign up for the activity.
Location: 17/F, Block E, Chungking Mansions, Tsim Sha Tsui. Please note that the lift goes up to only 16/F and volunteers will need to take the stairs from 16/F to 17/F.
Age: 18 years old or above
Remarks: The session will be conducted in English. If you cannot make it after signing up, please cancel your sign-up online immediately to release your spot for other volunteers on the waiting list.
