Description
The program is generously funded by the State Street Foundation.
Description:
In Hong Kong, few graduates from special schools for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities find employment, mainly due to inadequate training and lack of understanding and awareness among employers. This four-part communication program empowers students to master self-expression, excel at public speaking, and build lasting confidence. By volunteering, you’ll contribute directly to breaking down barriers, nurturing their voices, and fostering a more inclusive community.
Volunteer Role:
Act as a role player in communication scenarios to help students practice key skills.
Provide positive encouragement and constructive feedback during activities such as self-introduction and public speaking.
Assist the coach in setting up resources like picture cards and visual aids.
Support students in building confidence and consolidating their learning throughout the sessions.
Skills/Qualities Needed:
Patient, empathetic, good communication skills, comfortable engaging with young people with special needs.
Expected Outcomes:
Volunteers will gain firsthand experience supporting meaningful skill development and witness the students’ progress and empowerment.
Requirements/Remarks:
A 30-minute briefing will be provided to prepare volunteers for their roles.
We encourage volunteers to sign up for multiple sessions to foster deeper connections with our participants.
Volunteers must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. If you wish to bring a friend or family member, please ask them to register with us and sign up for the activity.
