Description
Description: While traditional festivals in Hong Kong should be a time of celebration and family-togetherness, they can be a time of isolation and loneliness for the 150,000+ elderly in the city living alone. The city’s volunteers can play a vital role in connecting with the elderly during these important festivals by celebrating the occasion together. This sends a powerful message that the larger community cares for and remembers these seniors–and gives them the opportunity to share the memories and traditions they associate with these holidays.
Preparing festival-themed art crafts together is a wonderful way to celebrate in a meaningful way and foster enjoyment and conversation.
Volunteer roles:
After taking part in a short briefing and welcome from the elderly centre, one volunteer will be paired up with two elderly people to support them while making art crafts together.
The whole session is facilitated by the art therapist.
All volunteers must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. Friends or family members must also register and sign up separately.
